FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Kia ora koutou

It has been a busy start up for 2024. The excitement of a new year, new goals, as well as multiple events to support our rangatahi to connect and be active.

Last week we ran the Inter House Athletics competition. It was a fun day with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Student Leaders from every house were visible and proactive helping to organise younger ones and lead events. Congratulations to Inverness House for taking out the comp. There was also some amazing individual performances and some records broken by our young athletes. We were really impressed with the number of our students who gave it a go even when they were nervous about participating in some events.

As a school community we want to reiterate the message I gave at our powhiri at the start of the year, intimidation or violence are not acceptable. Violence has wide range of negative impacts on our school and community and there is always another option to deal with challenging situations. We always have staff on duty during break times, very proactive school leaders and great support from our Guidance Counsellor and Learning Support Centre who can all help students to manage the challenges of adolescence.

This week our school assembly was a celebration to announce the students’ leaders for each House. The leaders have shown they are committed to the kaupapa at Bream Bay College and are ready to be role models and support our young ones. There are still more opportunities for those who missed out to gain skills and experiences as leaders and we hope that the highly proactive leadership from our Year 13’s continues throughout the year.

We also used Assembly to badge our Student Representative on the Board of Trustees Erelyn Lunjevich. She was elected by the student body through in 2023. Erelyn is already contributing valuable insights from a student’s experience to the Board discussions and decision making. We look forward to working with Erelyn for the rest of this year as we strive to improve our school.

Student Councils began last week and hold a critical place in the school organising events and promoting positive messages across our kura. Many thanks to the students who have committed to being involved and we hope that more students take this valuable opportunity to make connections, develop new skills and have a positive impact on our school community.

The 2024 house leaders have been chosen, and we are delighted to introduce the following students:

Sutherland House: Caitlin Agustin, Levi Williams, Aleena Everitt, and Isaac Toovey.
Inverness House: Calem Taiapa, Reuben Showler, Hannah Cross, and Erelyn Lunevich.
Ross House: Troy Mckenzie, Milly Robertson, Alessandra Hamilton, and Izaiahs Linton.
Argyll House: Grace Fetelika, Havana Te Pania-Herbert, Waihoroi Ashby, and Cirtus McShane.

These students will assume various responsibilities for their respective houses. These tasks include organising house events, leading house assemblies, collaborating with Whānau teachers and our Deans, and conveying crucial messages from council meetings to the student body.

These students have already showcased exceptional leadership abilities during Swimming and Athletics and are dedicated to putting in hard work and effort for both the houses and the Kura across all aspects of school life.

We are nearing the end of Week 6 which signals the end of the start up of the year and an opportunity to find our flow. It is an important time of the year for students to build good habits, commit to their learning and be organised so that they are prepared for a successful year. Attendance is up by 5% when we compare to this time last year and the number of students who have critically low attendance has declined significantly. We thank you for your support and we ask that you continue to do your bit to drive commitment and high standards so that our young people are set up for success.

CURRICULUM REPORT MARCH 2024 NCEA Level 1 Update
Last week we had an NCEA Level One Information Evening. Loads of whānau and students came to find out about the expectations for this level, the assessments and more. These are some key takeaways from the presentation:

3. The Co-requisites are a new requirement to gain the NCEA Qualification.
Information: Known as the CAAs: Common Assessment Activities
Information: Must achieve this to gain NCEA qualification
What? Numeracy / Pāngarau & Literacy / Matatini testing
Who?  Any student achieving 4A+ on their AsTTLe testing (Years 9, 10  & 11+)

Simply,              some students are more equipped with literacy & numeracy skills. The school will absolutely support     your child. There are some other NCEA standards that can be credited for the Co-requisites: (CAAs.)

Come to the next information session! (Advertised in our newsletters, on Facebook and via school emails). You are not alone if you are not sure about school systems, NCEA the portal, the junior curriculum and all assessments. Please keep asking us the questions so we can provide information that our whānau actually need… not what we think you need.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY 2024
On 29th February Bream Bay College held their annual school athletics day.  There were 42 field events and 62 track events completed in the course of the day, with the majority of the school participating and some students undertaking every event in their age grade.  This year a fun event was added with gumboot throwing, 3 legged race, moon hopping and obstacle course, these proved very popular with the students.  The inter house competition was very closely fought with the winner on the day being Inverness. Thanks to all of the staff who made the day a huge success.
